A Legacy of Equestrian Excellence
Explore the rich history and memorable moments that have defined the Lake Placid Horse Shows over the years.
1970s
In the summer of 1970, the very first “Token Horse Show” was held as a preliminary step toward accreditation with the American Horse Shows Association (AHSA). This inaugural event took place at Ruth Newberry’s farm, hosted by the East Kiln Pony Club of Ausable Forks.
Reflecting on that day, Mrs. Newberry fondly recalled, “The first Lake Placid Horse Show had 60 kids riding Pony Club horses. My daughter served as a makeshift judge, and our dog and cat were the only spectators.”
By 1972, the Lake Placid Horse Show Association was poised to take a significant leap forward by hiring Eugene R. Mische—the individual largely credited with the growth of Grand Prix show jumping in America—as the horse show manager. Under Mische’s leadership, the following year’s show introduced the $10,000 Adirondack Grand Prix, and word of his management quickly spread. As a result, rider entries nearly tripled, reflecting the newfound excitement and prestige associated with the event.
1980s
Mrs. Newberry passed the torch to Martin Stone, an international publisher, Thoroughbred breeder, and owner of Lake Placid’s Last Chance Ranch, which hosted many of the show’s events. Stone successfully united local businesses to rally for the horse show’s financial stability, and the town was eager to give back.
During his six years as chairman, Stone, with support from Jeremy Jacobs, revitalized the show after it weathered nearly-fatal rainstorms in 1985 and 1986. The horse show emerged stronger, poised to reclaim its status among the nation’s premier equestrian events, led by a new chairman whose energy and enthusiasm captured the attention of the horse show community.
1990s
In 1992, Richard M. “Dick” Feldman, then a Senior Vice President at Lehman Brothers, succeeded Stone as Chairman of the Lake Placid Horse Shows. A seasoned rider and board member since 1986, Feldman brought invaluable insight as the owner of the Belmont Stakes-winning Thoroughbred, “Bet Twice.”
Under Feldman’s leadership, the shows reached new heights as he actively sought input from riders, trainers, and horse owners to enhance the event. He fulfilled every promise, fostering strong loyalty among exhibitors.
In 1995, the horse shows saw significant upgrades, including expanded hunter rings, improved drainage, and a one-mile riding trail around the grounds. Food service facilities were enhanced, and additional picnic tables were installed for competitors and spectators alike.
Early 2000s
The Lake Placid Horse Shows continued to rise to unprecedented prominence under Feldman’s leadership. The success of the horse shows cultivated a national reputation, attracting an impressive roster of celebrities, including rock superstar Bruce Springsteen, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, actresses Glenn Close and Alfre Woodard, and news anchors Paula Zahn and Lou Dobbs. Additionally, Feldman initiated daily cable telecasts that provided viewers with an insider’s look at the various aspects of the horse show.
2010-2018
The Lake Placid Horse Shows reached a new milestone with the addition of a third week of competition and the installation of new footing, ensuring the event’s ongoing success for years to come. The show’s remarkable popularity under Feldman can be attributed to his boundless energy and unwavering commitment to making the Lake Placid Horse Shows the best in the world.
“Asking riders and trainers for their feedback at every show is essential,” Feldman stated. “Their comments and constructive criticisms help us enhance the horse shows and reach our full potential.”
2018-2024
In 2018, Philip E. Richter assumed the role of chairman of the Lake Placid Horse Shows, prioritizing the modernization of the event as the equestrian sport evolved. With “boutique shows” becoming a thing of the past, Lake Placid needed to distinguish itself to thrive in a competitive landscape.
2024 - Present
Allen Rheinheimer assumed the role of show manager in 2024 and redesigned the layout of the riding surfaces on the grounds. While we bid farewell to the grass field, we welcomed state-of-the-art international all-weather footing and expanded all rings. Additionally, Allen reintroduced FEI competition for the 2025 Lake Placid Horse Shows, elevating the event with international competition in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains.
