Lake Placid, NY – October 9, 2024 – Construction of new show rings at the Lake Placid Horse Shows has begun. The redesign and reconstruction of all four show rings includes removal of the grass in what was the Grand Prix Field and installation of new state-of-the-art, all-weather footing in all four rings.
“This is a very exciting time for the Lake Placid Horse Shows,” said Philip Richter, Chairman of LPHSA, Inc. “While so many of us have loved riding in the grass field, the fact of the matter is that the sport has progressed and, if you look around the country, competing on grass is no longer part of our sport. Major horse shows like the Hampton Classic, Old Salem and Upperville have made the change and in each and every case, it has been well received. We have listened to exhibitors and the message has been clear – as great as the grass was in its time, it is time for Lake Placid to make the change, and that is what we are doing!”
The new layout and design includes swapping the location of the Grand Prix ring with that of the two hunter rings. The Jumper Annex will remain in the same location, but with additional space. The footing is being installed by Travis Gould and his JTWG, Inc. and the project is being overseen by horse show manager Allen Rheinheimer.
In addition to the new show rings, the grounds renovation also includes improvements to the schooling and stabling areas. “The new rings are the main part of what is only a first step in updating and upgrading our horse show grounds,” Richter said. “We are working on improving the entire grounds and are in the process of developing a three-year plan that we believe will reestablish the Lake Placid Horse Shows as one of the nation’s premier horse shows.”
“I want to thank the Town of North Elba for its support and cooperation, and also several donors who have stepped up to help provide needed funding. While we still need additional support to fully fund this project, we are excited that the new rings will be ready for next summer’s horse shows!”
Located in the historic Olympic town of Lake Placid, NY, the annual Lake Placid Horse Shows offer two weeks of exciting equestrian competition in a setting no other horse show can match, surrounded by breathtaking views of the Adirondack Mountains and the chance to enjoy countless activities that help make the Lake Placid Horse Shows, “The Best Two Weeks of a Horseman’s Summer!” Lake Placid hosts competitions for riders of all levels and ages ranging from young children on polished ponies, to glistening hunters, to Olympic veterans aboard their grand prix mounts. With a variety of things to do for the entire family both on and off the showgrounds, it is no wonder that Lake Placid is home to one of exhibitors’ favorite shows in the U.S.
The Lake Placid Horse Shows, sponsored by Bainbridge Farms, LLC, and presented by Sea Shore Stables, LLC, return to the North Elba Showgrounds, June 24-July 6, 2025, offering a full schedule of world-class competition with more than half-a-million dollars in prize money. The newly upgraded Grand Prix ring will be able to host the highest-level showjumping competitions, including FEI, while the expanded Jumper Annex ring will provide an enhanced experience for tomorrow’s up and coming jumper riders. The two new hunter rings will be both separated and larger than in the past and supported by an enlarged schooling area and better spectator viewing. These improvements will provide a better competitive experience for all and support a broader range of classes in all weather conditions.
